At 34 years old, I’ve lived roughly half my life with the Internet and half without. I’m old enough to remember a time when pornography wasn’t a mouse click away. 20 years ago Playboy was the most well-known name in porn. I remember people joking about having Playboy or other pornographic magazines so they could read the articles. It was absurd, of course. No one who possessed a Playboy magazine was interested in reading the articles.
But can you imagine parents buying a Playboy magazine, cutting out all the pictures of naked women or any references to anything sexual and then giving their child a Playboy to read the articles? No. There are thousands of other books, magazines, or newspapers that a child could read. Giving a child a Playboy, even with the nudity removed, would be exposing that child to something harmful to his or her soul while giving an endorsement that the magazine was okay.
What do the preceding two paragraphs have to do with the title of this post, you ask? My answer: singing the music of Bethel Redding or Hillsong in your church is akin to giving your child a Playboy magazine with the nudity removed.
How? Let me explain.
Bethel Redding is a cult. By any definition of a cult, Bethel Redding qualifies. Bill Johnson, lead pastor of Bethel Redding, teaches that Jesus was not God when he performed miracles, teaches that Jesus was born again, and teaches that anyone who interprets Paul’s thorn in the flesh as a sickness or illness is guilty of preaching a different gospel. It is, in fact, Bill Johnson who is preaching a different Jesus and a different gospel. That is not a charge I make recklessly. It is also not a charge I make alone.
Tony Miano has recently started a blog to catalogue some of the false teaching that is coming out of Bethel Redding. You can read and see more here if you’d like to.
Bethel Redding is dangerous, and thousands of people from around the world are traveling to Bethel to be a part of what is taking place there.
Hillsong is a little more difficult to pin down, but I believe Hillsong should also be classified as a cult. Discernment with Hillsong is a little more difficult than with Bethel Redding because the leaders of Hillsong don’t really teach anything doctrinal. Every time I listen to a sermon by Brian Houston, Carl Lentz, Christine Caine, or anyone else associated with Hillsong, the phrase that comes to mind is “empty words.” A lot of words are being spoken, but they are empty words, devoid of any real Biblical truth.
You will not hear anyone from Hillsong confront people with the reality of their sinfulness. You will not hear anyone from Hillsong call people to repentance and belief in the gospel, the very message that Jesus preached.
Hillsong absolutely teaches a form of the prosperity gospel. The Hillsong teaching is that Jesus will make every aspect of your temporal, earthly life better, if only you’ll let him.
If you read the words of Jesus and the Apostles recorded in the New Testament, if you read the earliest writings of the church fathers, and then listen to or read what Bill Johnson and the leadership of Bethel Redding are teaching, and listen to or read what Brian Houston and other leaders of Hillsong are teaching, it should be obvious that Bethel Redding and Hillsong are both in their own ways teaching an entirely different religion than the faith once for all delivered to the saints.
And here’s the thing, both Bethel Redding, through their music team Jesus Culture, and Hillsong have intentionally used their music teams to build their global empires. It is through their music that most people are first exposed to Bethel Redding and Hillsong.
When we sing their songs in our churches, and give credit to Bethel or Hillsong for the song, we are giving our people a silent though full endorsement of those churches and their teachings. Though the songs themselves may be theologically sound, we are exposing our people to spiritual poison, and telling them to drink it down.
Once we’ve given that endorsement, how do you think our people are going to respond when a Bill Johnson video or article shows up on their social media feeds? How do you think they’re going to respond when Hillsong or Jesus Culture come to your town for a money-making concert worship experience?
When I bring up these thoughts in conversation I’m often met with resistance. I hear things like, “Chew the meat and spit out the bones,” or, “Don’t throw the baby out with the bathwater.” Those cliches don’t mesh with the Biblical teaching.
The Biblical teaching is to avoid such men as Bill Johnson and Brian Houston (2 Timothy 3:5). The Biblical teaching is that an elder (pastor) in a church must both teach sound doctrine and rebuke those who contradict it, to silence them (Titus 1:9-11).
People will often say we just need to trust our people to exercise discernment. In a sense that’s true. Spiritual maturity is like physical maturity, we raise a person from newborn to maturity and trust them to make the right decisions. In any church there are going to be mature, theologically sound saints, and there are going to be baby saints who don’t yet have a grasp of sound doctrine. Do you want to tell your new believers that Bethel Redding and Hillsong are okay, and then have them believe Bill Johnson when he teaches that Jesus was not God when he performed miracles? Do you want to tell them that Bethel Redding and Hillsong are okay, and then have that believer thinking it’s their own fault or their own lack of faith when they find out they have cancer and healing doesn’t come?
No.
Pastors are called to shepherd their sheep, which involves feeding their sheep the nutrition they need and protecting them from danger. Singing songs by Bethel Redding and Hillsong in your church is opening your sheep pen to the wolves and offering them a buffet. You’re essentially handing your children a pornographic magazine with the pornographic images removed, and trusting that he or she will grow up to recognize pornography as something evil and soul-destroying.
It doesn't matter about who wrote the song. Or which band is associated with so and so plus doctrine that we don't like. As christians globally we're bound to have some disagreement. But let us deal in our salvation with fear and trembling. At the end of the day, I would sing some Bethel songs because it expresses my love for God in a way that no other gimmicky (lets have a party) gospel song can portray. Also we all like to complain about how there are preachers who love God with honesty and sincerity YET they don't agree with one concept in the bible. The truth is, what we're all searching for is JESUS himself and no-one on this Earth has ever fit that criteria. We keep on searching and searching for a Man completely like Jesus which completely fits the bill. But its not gonna happen. And we like to complain because it hasn't happened. At the end of the day, lets look to Jesus and help one-another. Not be stumblingblock for one-another.
ReplyDeleteNo. I strongly disagree. Let's see... if we know now or before that bethel has a crazy and demonic doctrine, and we believe that, but still want to play their music, isn't that mixture. Let me explain, we believe that bethels doctrine is off, and does not their music called "BETHEL MUSIC" and Jesus Culture out of bethel. It is their band. Like Elevation church. Their band is Elevation Worship, which I don't like either, but that's a whole other topic. Anyway, pack to the point, bethel music is out of bethel church, and if their doctrine is wrong and they are worshipping another Jesus, why would we sing the music. Yes, some lyrics to their songs are great, but what matters is the doctrine behind the music (and the lyrics). Jesus says "A little leaven leveneth the whole lump". So I will not play bethel ever. Plus, why would you even think about this, when there are hundreds if not thousands of other christian song writers who are on point and have the right doctrine. It makes me sick when I hear Bill Johnson "preach". I will not play any bethel ever.
DeleteWho are some Gospel centered contemporary artists you would suggest?
DeleteAustin Stone Worship, Eric Neider, Aric Harding, Cademons Call, Andrew Peterson, to name a few!

ReplyDeleteso true i agree with you
Delete@ANON AMEN. GOD IS GOOD. GOD IS LOVE. As Jesus Spoke, His Words Became Living & Active, Creating All Things That Are Good & Pleasing To God The Father. May our words be as Jesus's, going Forth Becoming Living & Active, Creating All Things That Are Good Pleasing To God Our Father, Amen.
DeleteIf the lyrics in any music doesn't agree with the gospel then get it out of the church.
ReplyDeleteThe Lord Jesus Christ said that God the Father Seeketh worshippers that worship in Spirit and Truth.
If the lyrics are not the truth then the Father cannot and will not inhabit the praises of His people thats why alot of churches wouldn't really know or even experience Gods presence.Church atmosphere has turned to entertainment rather than turning to a Holy God.
Bethel Music/Jesus Culture and Hillsong are movements that are leading people away from Christ. As a worship leader who played many of their songs, the Lord lead me to look into these movements. And now I'm so thankful to Him. Please research these movements and pray for discernment. God bless
ReplyDeleteA sonblyric that says I surrender I want to know you more or that says you don't give your heart in prices or that says oh the over whelming never endind reckless love of God or that says there's a peace far beyonbeyond all understanding let it flow when my mind's under siege all anxiety bows in the presence of Jesus the keeper of peace or a pastor that teaches we shouldn't be slaves to fear cause perfect love casts out fear what exactly have they said that goes against what Jesus said how can you hold baptism if you don't give your lives to Christ have you ever really apud attention to what they say
DeleteWow - this is literally the worst thing I've ever read. Well, gotta go, time to rehearse the 2 Bethel and 1 Hillsong United worship songs I'm leading this Sunday. We're even leading the one hillsong united song that has a cuss word in it!!!!! Lol
ReplyDeleteI would like to discuss these things more in-depth with you if you're willing. What makes this literally the worst thing you've ever read? What study of God's word and the historical teaching in Christ's church have you done that leads you to believe Bethel and Hillsong are teaching truth?
DeleteIf people aren't willing to research these movements because of a lack of biblical understanding or discernment or laziness or whatever the case may be, then we must diligently pray for them. Ive gotten so frustrated over the songs being played in so many churches today that do not even point to Christ but instead glorify ourselves. Unfortunately, I believe that its something that will not change but get worse as we get closer to the return of the Lord. I need to continue to take it all to the Lord in prayer so as to not be overcome with bitterness. To all who hear me, please continue to pray that eyes are opened to see the deception that seems to be spreading so rapidly and that more people would begin to earnestly contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints!
DeletePlease pray for decernment
DeleteI used to agree with you and there are some things taught by the Redding folks I don't get, but at least in the US we were raised with a powerless, Holy Spiritless gospel. The Charismatic movement simply has the most fruit of any movement out there, I don't believe they are a cult, I believe they are the beach head of a reformation in the American church. Some biblical things that Bethel teaches that my local mega churches don't: Jesus said we are better off without him and with the Holy Spirit (John 16:7), that we are actually commanded to heal the sick, raise the dead and caste out demons (Matthew 10:8), and that we have been equipped for the Supernatural (Acts 2:17), I know this sound heretical.....I used to feel the exact same way. It almost ended my relationship with my fiancee (wife in two weeks!), but I believe if you test what Bethel teaches against the bible, you'll find it lines up. We are supernatural beings with infinitely more power, authority and love than we might believe because what Jesus's sacrifice empowers us to be.https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2015/02/04/inspiration-nation-mom-prays-son-back-to-life/22883985/
ReplyDeleteThank you for the respectful disagreement. I hope you'll allow me to challenge a few of your statements.
DeleteFirst, what is the definition of "fruit", and on what basis do you claim the charismatic movement has the most of it? There is no doubt the charismatic movement is the fastest growing movement in the world today, but are you reading stories about what is happening in charismatic churches in Africa? You should look up Conrad Mbewe and read some of what he has written about what is happening there. I've lived in three in countries in Asia over the last eight years. Most of the churches here are at least mildly charismatic, but the gospel is largely absent. John made it clear in his gospel that people can believe in the miracles of Jesus without actually believing in Jesus. Believing Jesus (or his followers) does miracles is not the same as repentance unto eternal life.
Second, you quoted Matthew 10:8 saying we're commanded to heal the sick, raise the dead, and cast out demons. Curiously, you didn't mention we're not to acquire gold (money) or take bags or clothes on our journey. In Matthew 10 Jesus was sending his Apostles out on a specific mission. As you read the rest of the New Testament it's exceedingly clear that the Apostles were given miracle working powers by Jesus that other believers were not. We must read each passage in the Bible in context, being careful not to apply to ourselves specific things that were said to specific people at specific times in history. Some statements are universal in their application, some are not.
Third, concerning Bethel, even if we accept that the supposed miracles are genuine, the fact remains that Bill Johnson is a heretic who teaches a false gospel and a false Jesus. Johnson says that the gospel promises healing in this life, something that neither Jesus nor his Apostles ever taught. (It's worth noting here that Johnson needs glasses to read. He can't heal his own eyesight?) Equally offensive is that Johnson teaches Jesus was not God when he performed miracles. However, there has never been a moment in all of eternity that Jesus was not God. The Bible is clear on this. The Scriptural command is not to learn what we can from someone like Bill Johnson and ignore the problems, but to have nothing to do with someone who teaches falsely. Paul said anyone who preaches a different is accursed (damned), and sadly, Bill Johnson falls into that category.
In Matthew 7:21-23, Jesus warns that many who prophesied in his name, cast out demons in his name, and did many mighty works in his name will hear him say, "I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness." Miracles alone do not indicate genuine faith.
We do have supernatural power, but that power is to believe the gospel, followed by empowerment to proclaim the gospel to the lost, to live holy lives obeying the commands of Christ, and to endure suffering for Christ's sake. The Apostles did not equate an ability to perform miracles with spiritual maturity, but rather right doctrine and right living.
I pray that you will flee from the false teaching of Bethel, and embrace the true gospel and true Christ.

DeleteThe degree to which you take Bill's words out of context is appalling.
ReplyDeleteIt might seem like this article is being pedantic (and probably a bit fire and brimestone with the headline) but as a church we need to weed out false doctrine and take safeguarding the truth of the gospel seriously. Sweeping non biblical (and questionable) teachings and practices under the rug, particularly things like suzo-prayer or Bethel's grave soaking (go to youtube), might seem acceptable to many but if that trend continues very quickly we will have a big mess in the living room (in this context the church).
ReplyDeleteThe reason we need to be careful is for hundreds of years the face of Christianity became unrecognisable because of people's ignorance to the Word and their pursuit of feeling and reliance on human invented ways of worshipping God and being right with Him.
Take for instance the Christian church in the medieval period. Very few could read or write and the Word was almost exclusively recited in Latin (and had been for hundreds of years) - which meant the every day folk had next to no understanding of what the gospel actually said. The bible and its teaching were inaccessible. Instead they relied on imagery in the church for their understanding of what it was all about, which of course is a very poor substitute (which has its parallels in the modern day where people seek the experience 'tongues' 'worship' 'miracles' rather than the thing itself)
Because of the imagery, which often depicted Jesus the judge, Jesus was deemed to not be approachable (he was far too glorious and vengeful) and so people started seeking Him through intermediaries (like his Mother Mary and other saints - James, John etc.). This inevitably saw the rise of saint affinity and worship (idolatry) and then evolved to the worship of things (bits of wood from the cross / Christ's apparent blood). As these things developed and as people's knowledge of the bible became redundant the church introduced the sacriments, which distorted people's understanding of how they were saved - believing it was by doing the sacriments or acts (handing the means of achieving salvation to people or the Pope, and not to Christ). Notice all these things were fairly subtle behaviours, which cascaded into major corruptions of the truth until people like Luther and Calvin came along. This is what could happen again if we let false ministries take root in people's minds and we abandon the word for directives from other sources.
Make no mistake - we are accountable and are responsible for how we teach the word.
It's worth saying that John Piper's commented "we really need to keep in mind that every charismatic abuse has its mirror image in non-charismatic abuses. Nothing I am going to say is unique to charismatics. In some of these cases, the non-charismatic church is more guilty than the charismatic."
It's easy to point the finger than it is to look at ourselves. If we're demanding a faithful adherence to the gospel elsewhere, we also need to ask if we're actually pursuing it for ourselves.
Iron sharpens iron. I hope everyone who reads this article treats this issue with a level understanding and doesn't drift towards legalism or conversely non biblical practice - both are a long way off from God.
I love what you wrote!!!
DeleteIm very concerned with the influence via the worship music of Bethel that the teachings of Bill Johnsons antd the practices there can be minimized enogh for well- meaning churches to say, “ cant throw the baby out with the bathwater” just because they resonate with their beautiful worship songs. In singing theses songs we are in “association” with the teachings and in that misleading our impressionable baby Christians in our Churches. It is nieve for the Shepherds of our congregations to not see this danger
lurking especially for our youth!
I also loved that you mentioned tjat we must also check ourselves that we do not error into legalism. We truly are commanded to expose and not to align with or condone heretical teaching but we must not be hateful when we do.
In writing this, im also trying to reach out to find other like - minded and concerned believers to join with , share and pray with. Please connect with me on google to share more or let me know if there are others joining together to face this tsunami of doctrinal deception.
I'm amused. What we have here is a dispute among believers. rather one-sided as the writer chooses to joust windmills. You all believe a bunch of fantasies because they made it into the book and then get upset that the other side believes some fantasy that you don't, or doesn't believe one that you do. And then you create division and discord because of that. Bwahahahaha. Meanwhile even people like me who have discarded the fantasies and mythology can appreciate the words and music and be encouraged by the good sentiment while casting aside all the bloody stuff. Can't tell you how many non-religious people get as much blessing from nice Christian music as we all do from Love Lift Me Up Where We Belong and Like a Bridge Over Troubled Water. I don't give one bit of worry as to who is rolling around the floor or barking or howling at the Charismatic Church of the Minute. Or whether the traditional service is at 9 or 11. Rite I or Rite II. Have you heard how lousy most of the singing is in many Catholic Churches these days? That should be a huge alarm to the American Church as children are not getting good songs into their minds. So they turn to rap and hip hop with many times destructive lyrics. If they had enough good Church music to listen to coming at them from all sides, that's what they would be humming throughout the day. And yet this writer is concerned that when we go around humming Our God is a lion, the lion of Judah... the next thing you know we'll be falling into the lap of the Johnson cult. Nah.
ReplyDeleteThis article is not meant for swines or dogs. That's why you don't understand the ramifications of doctrinal error, because you have no knowledge of the truth yet. You are dead in your sins and have no life in you. I used to be the same way....
DeleteHey wait! If Hillsong and bethel redding are both cult how does that affect you? It's not your problem, they shall be judged by God..
DeleteHey wait! If Hillsong and bethel redding are both cult how does that affect you? It's not your problem, they shall be judged by God..
DeleteThat is exactly what is happening Rob. It seems that maybe you have fallen into this movement? Have you seen or experienced the 'impartations' that happen in some of the meetings? Its called the Kundalini spirit, Hindus practice this, and it is demonic. So a true Shepard should warn his flock to avoid having anything to do with so called worship music that makes us 'feel' good rather than glorifies our God and lures us to become involved with this so subtlety deceptive NAR movement. I'm watching it happen all around me and it breaks my heart. Bethel is a cult, leading the young ones astray, their faith has become based on feelings and the supernatural. But more importantly the practice's and importations are demonic. Take a look at Heidi Bakers demonic importations on u-tube.
ReplyDeleteHi
ReplyDeleteThose who hear what the Spirit says will spiritually discern the false teachings in bethel and hillsong churches .....sad to say that typically almost all 21st century churches use their songs for worship either they are ignorant, or they think it is cool for drawing young people ,or simply they like their music henceforth the compromise!
I just want to be in a worship ministry without having to compromise!
Me Too.
DeletePersonally, I think, if Jesus reads this articles and those comments, He will say : you are Pharisee. You judge people instead of loving them AS THEY ARE
ReplyDeleteDidn't know any of this, but I despise Hillsong because the founder was a pedophile who abused family friends' son (called him his "golden boy") for years. When the boy finally got up his nerve to tell someone (mom), his mom said he should think of what telling this secret would do to the church. Imagine! The man is now in his 40s and has brain cancer. Current leader of Hillsong (the founder's son) has testified in court, yet everyone in the church administration acts like it was just a "moral failure" instead of the crime that it was. I like some of Hillsong's music but can't stomach it, thinking of this poor man and how his life was ruined. https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/real-life/news-life/child-sex-abuse-victim-finally-speaks-out-after-decades-of-shame/news-story/ecaab6cdf6e38deeb3d4fe31025d14f7
ReplyDeleteThanks brothers, i pray that the Almighty Father should forgive me through his only son jesus christ of nazarite for fellowshipping with hillsong and jesus culture through thier songs that promote chrasmatic movement. isnyei
ReplyDeleteNegatively writing about other ministries is considered demonic. If you think you can do better, just do it instead of bashing other ministries. When you can do what Jesus did and even greater, than you might receive authority like John the Baptist to rebuke religious people calling them snakes. Generally, it was the religious who wrote articles on Jesus and John the Baptist and pointing out their negatives. Please do not give the excuse that you need to expose. Jesus never came to expose. Only the religious who are prideful and misinformed and without the Holy Spirit tries to expose. You are stumbling many people.
ReplyDeleteThe problem with most commenters here you are putting God in a fleshly box. God said, His ways are not our ways. As far as Bill Johnson's teaching I been following it for a long time and I found NOTHING he taught was unscriptural and in fact he has presented scripture that most do not want touch because they do not allow the Holy Spirit the freedom to operate in their ministries. Bethel, Hillsong and other like works are bringing God's power in the original form to the mainstream thus delivering more soles from the pit than most churches. A cult is a church that has the form of godliness but deny the power and do not operate in love. Sadly most denominations are operating as cults and causing more people to go to hell than the devil.
ReplyDeleteJesus is God, but when He was on Earth, He did not use His divine powers. Instead, He took the form of a Man, a Man filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. It was with this power that He healed.
ReplyDeleteGod wants us to follow the example of Jesus, and do even greater works (John 14:12)
As a Man, Jesus allowed Himself to be a real Man just as we are (although He is God)
DeleteThere were times when He could not do any mighty work (Mark 6:5)
Yes - He could not (not that He would not) He was limited by the unbelief of the people. Yes, the the Bible says Jesus "COULD NOT".
Thank you for writing this article. You are exactly right and I see all the negative comments which is exactly what I would expect from all those that have been led astray. I pray for all of you that your eyes would be opened. Please read your Bible for yourself and look at the words of Jesus and it will be abundantly clear just how much Satan has infiltrated so called Christian Churches.
